He’s Gone Away (over Yandro)

February 26, 2018 / lalacapellmeister / Recordings for Practice

A setting of the traditional song, He’s Gone Away, from Three Mountain Ballads, arranged by Ron Nelson. It is a question and answer song, about who will court a girl when her beau goes away “over Yandro.” I have an old song book that says Yandro is a mountain in South (north?) Carolina. The melody has some very bluesy bits, suggesting that it came from further south.

The sopranos divide on a few notes, so I created lala versions for first and second sopranos, altos, tenors and basses emphasized.
