Here’s what Jerry has to say about the Fall Concert:
“The first half of the concert will be classical, featuring an Advent cantata by Dietrich Buxtehude, Pergolesi’s delightful “Magnificat” (The Song of Mary…”My Soul Magnifies the Lord”), and concluding with Joseph Haydn’s “Missa Sancti Joannes de Deo” (The Mass of Saint John of God, aka the “Small Organ Mass.”) These masterpieces are relatively short – averaging about 10 to 12 minutes.
The second half of our concert will be a wonderful potpourri of shorter works that will include our own Linda Dowdell’s beautiful setting of “Ring Out, Wild Bells!” with text by Tennyson, the exciting “Brazilian Psalm” by Jean Berger, Morten Lauridsen’s exquisite “O Magnum Mysterium” paired with his “Sure On this Shining Night” [NOT Barber’s], John Rutter’s “Donkey Carol” paired with his “Candlelight Carol” and a pair of Frederick Silver pieces: “The Twelve Days After Christmas” (a funny novelty parody of The Twelve Days of Christmas) and his beautiful and tender Chanukah song “A Feast of Lights.” Jackson Berkey contributes his stirring “Hark! The Herald Angels!” that has audience participation on the last verse to conclude the concert (a sneaky way to get a standing O!). The foregoing is out of my head, but I think I got most of it.”
